Barry University’s Commuter Student Lounge, located in the R. Kirk Landon Student Union, has undergone a makeover this Spring.
After two weeks of renovations, the 900 sq. ft. room features white and red walls, wood-style floors, playful furniture and a conference room in the back.
It aims to provide commuters a comfortable area to study, relax, store belongings and build student engagement.

The space also features a NEC flat-screen TV, five cushioned armchairs upholstered in a bold, glossy red material and three round tables paired with bright red plastic chairs.
“I think it’s important for commuters to have a welcoming space to get a sense of belonging rather than only coming to campus to attend classes and then leave,” said Hector Ayala, a junior majoring in computer science. “So, having a welcoming space further pushes that sense of belonging of ‘Hey, we know not all students live on campus. We’re working towards making it better for you guys too.' ”
The conference room includes a round table with chairs and a whiteboard, with supplies available for checkout through the Student Union Office during their office hours.

Previously, the lounge had an old microwave and unused furniture. Now, it’s decked out with a new nostalgic retro countertop microwave oven and 18 locker spaces for storage.
Lockers are available for all students. They must bring their own locks and follow posted instructions.
The Commuter Student Lounge is open 24/7.
