This Career Day helps students grow professionally by providing networking opportunities and offering valuable experience— especially as graduation approaches for many students. The event was divided into three main segments.

First, there was the employer tabling where organizations offered career advancement opportunities for students from various majors.

Kerrie Trahan, a national recruiter with City Year AmeriCorps, attended the event to recruit students of all majors and recent graduates who hope to “gain skills and experience while preparing for their next steps, whether professionally or academically.”

“City Year is a national education nonprofit. Our goal is to move the needle for students not only academically, but also to provide them with social, emotional, and learning support through Student Success Coaches—mentors and tutors who work with students for an academic year of service,” she said.

The event also offered professional headshots, with assistance from the advertising agency, providing free photos for students who wanted to update their LinkedIn profiles and portfolios.

The final segment was the "Dress for Success" workshop where attendees learned about different dress codes for interviews and work environments, as well as the importance of maintaining a professional appearance. The Career & Experiential Learning department, located in Thompson Hall, can assist students with their resumes, LinkedIn profiles, career counseling, and job/internship searches. They update the job search database every Wednesday to keep you informed and up to date.

Judisha Williams, the director of the department, said, “We are offering a 'Dress for Success' workshop to help students understand how to be more polished when stepping into interview spaces in terms of dressing for the occasion. Also, how to give confidence to yourself when you are going into those spaces.”

One graduate student attended out of curiosity for the options available to Barry students.

“I think that if you have an opportunity to make connections and learn about the work out there, it is great,” said Emma Lillback, a master’s in business student.

Camila Yepes, a talent scout with Enterprise Mobility, was there to offer students a spot in its management training program.

“We hire individuals with a bachelor’s degree—right before graduation, this is a great opportunity for business majors, as well as students from any other major,” she said. “The program starts with management training, then progresses to an assistant manager role, followed by a brand manager position. After that, there are various corporate roles available across the country.”

Renee Subaran, a talent acquisition specialist with Charter Schools USA, was present to recruit Barry students for parttime opportunities and alumni for full-time opportunities.

“CS USA is one of North America's largest and fastest growing school management companies,” she said. “Our mission is to create strong minds and good hearts, and overall, we want our alumni to know that there are many opportunities, whether in our corporate sector or within one of our schools with our children.”

Looking ahead, the department is hosting its main event, the Career Fair, on March 12 in Andreas 111 and 112 from 3 to 6 p.m.
