Have you ever noticed that row of buildings with a big patch of green grass in the center just behind the Broad Auditorium, and wondered, “What exactly is a quadrangle?" Well, it’s the Fine Arts Department: home of all things art, dance, and theatre! This semester, the Fine Arts Department is hosting a variety of events, plays, and showcases that you do not want to miss out on!

In the theatre sector, their big fall production Kodachrome, directed by theatre professor Stephen Kieser, will be held from October 16-18 in the Broad Theatre. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start. It follows the complicated story of Suzanne, the town photographer– played by theatre major Natalia Saiz– who guides the audience through an intertwined story of the people around her. The play’s stage manager N’Koya Bermudez, a theatre major at Barry, said play is “about experiencing how love is synonymous with loss and vice versa.”
Next on the theatre calendar is a stage combat workshop on October 22 from 4 to 6 p.m., hosted by the club TNT (Talent and Teams). Here in FA 149, students will be taught various stage combat techniques, like how to throw a stage punch, how to fall properly without hurting yourself, and many fight sequences, by fellow Barry students Davian Pereyra and Christopher Zarn.
And if you think that’s not enough, the theatre department is also holding a play reading called Radio TBS, also directed by N’Koya Bermudez, on October 30, in the Pelican Theatre. This story follows two media figures, played by theatre majors Luna (Finn) Borges and Anne Lamont, who talk about the trailer park town they live in and the crazy characters they run into. Though that’s all in the month of October, get ready for November!
This November, the Fine Arts Department is collaborating with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) for a visual arts reception and art show. On November 6, the Gato Gallery in Thompson Hall will showcase various paintings, drawings, photography, and more created by MDCPS art teachers and students. There will be a reception in Thompson from 6-8 p.m., with light food, where the MDCPS students will be getting Barry Awards. All students are welcome!

And finally, the Dance Department’s fall showcase Interlusions XXX: Elementals is taking the Broad Theatre stage on November 2021. Artistically directed by dance professor Yvonne Goodridge Jones, with the help of me as her assistant artistic director, this dance show will take viewers on a journey through the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. With a diverse cast of various backgrounds and experiences, a plethora of dance genres, and music choices, this dance show is not something you would want to miss!
The Fine Arts Department offers students activities almost every week in October and November. If you enjoy a good play, listening to singing, or watching dance performances, these events are the perfect way to fill your schedule. You can explore your artistic side while supporting your fellow students.
