5 DIY DORM SCENT HACKS

By Samya Rosario

Imagine you’ve been walking back and forth from class all day, juggling assignments, half asleep in lectures, and finally, you drag yourself to your dorm only to be smacked in the face with a reek of mold, disappointments and dirty clothes. From leftover take-out to sweaty gym clothes stuffed in the corner, odors can build up fast in small, shared spaces. And since most schools ban candles, incense, and anything with an open flame, students often feel stuck with that nasty “dorm funk.”

Luckily, there are old traditional home remedies that are creative, budget-friendly to get rid of that lingering smell so that you can finally invite that cute classmate over. Here are 5 tips to make your dorm smell inviting without breaking university rules.

1. Essential Oil Cotton Ball Hack

Candles may be banned, but essential oils are your new best friend. Take a few cotton balls and add a couple of drops of your favorite oil lavender for relaxation, peppermint for focus, or citrus for an energizing boost. Place them in a small mason jar,

tuck one behind your pillow, or tape one discreetly near an AC vent or fan. The airflow spreads the fragrance naturally and safely. The best part? You can adjust the potency of the scent throw by adding more drops or even switch up the scents whenever you want, depending on your mood or study vibe.

2. DIY Coffee Ground Deodorizer

If you’re a coffee lover, this one’s for you. Used coffee grounds are natural odor absorbers that double as an earthy fragrance and air freshener. All you need to do is dry the used grounds, put them in a small jar, add tin foil on the top and poke a few holes in. Place the jar near your laundry ham- per, under your bed, or on your

desk. Instead of masking odors, it absorbs them leaving your space smelling like a Dunkin' Donut.

3. Citrus Peel Air Freshener

Next time you eat an orange or lemon, save the peels! Place them in a small bowl with a pinch of salt (to help dry them out faster). As the peels sit, they’ll release a

natural citrus scent that brightens up your whole dorm. For a cozy twist, add a drop of vanilla extract. It creates a warm, bakery-like smell. Not only is this hack natural and cheap, but it also puts your snack scraps to good use.

4. Vinegar + Essential Oil Spray

Sometimes you just need a quick reset. Instead of buying a chemical infused disinfectant you can make you own natural cleaning spray by mixing equal parts water and (white or apple cider) vinegar in a spray bottle, then add 10–15 drops of your favorite essential oil/ fragrance oil. The vinegar neutralizes odors while the essential oil leaves behind a fresh scent. Spray it on your curtains, rugs, or directly onto your roommate if they reek that bad. It’s a game-changer for instantly refreshing your space.

5. Wax Melt & Candle Lamp Hack

This hack if for my lazy people who don’t have the schedule or patience to sit down and craft a home remedy, even though candles are banned in most dorms, you can still enjoy the luxury of having one with a wax melt warmer or candle lamp. These plug into the wall, use a safe heating bulb instead of fire, and fill your room with fragrance in

minutes. It’s the perfect solution for students who want that homely candle vibe without risking a fire alarm.
