Barry University’s Department of Student and Family Engagement brought the Hispanic Flavors to the Thompson Lobby on Oct. 1 for Hispanic Heritage Month.

The event that took place from noon to 1:30 p.m. aimed to unite the Barry community and highlight the Hispanic culture within the diversity of the campus and student body.

“We see them, we love them, and we will celebrate with them,” said Zhonell Bailey, the event coordinator and associate director of orientation and leadership, “We just wanted them to have a space to come, hang out, and take a breather.”

Songs from iconic, Hispanic artists like Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee and Karol G were playing as students mingled and enjoyed food like pork, tres leches, white rice and black beans.

The space was decorated with different flags from countries like Venezuela, Colombia, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico.

During the event, a slideshow played showcasing figures like Rueban Dario, a famous Nicaraguan poet, journalist and diplomat who created the Spanish-language literary movement known as Modernismo.

“Barry is one of the most culturally diverse universities in the country, so I think it’s important to do the most you can for each diversity out there,” said Jacob Gabriel Orozco, a senior majoring in psychology with a specilaization in forensic, who is from Nicaragua. “It’s important for people to feel recognized for where they come from and never forget that.”

Taylor Hanna, a junior serving as Miss CSA of the Caribbean Student Association, speaks out about the importance of cultural events within helping students connect to their background.

“I think it’s very important to celebrate everyone’s culture and where they come from, just so people can feel appreciated, and have a taste of home away from home,” said the 22-year-old majoring in theatre dance.

Through this event, Barry students from different backgrounds have the opportunity to engage and create stronger bonds as a community.

Here are the events still happening for Hispanic Heritage Month at Barry:
